A Hall of Fame is a type of museum established for any field of endeavor to honor individuals of noteworthy achievement in that field. In most cases, these halls of fame consist of actual halls or museums which enshrine the honorees with sculptures, plaques, and displays of memorabilia. In other cases, the hall of fame is more figurative, and simply consists of a list of names of noteworthy individuals maintained by an organization. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is technically the National Football League's Hall of fame. The building opened in Canton , Ohio , United states , on September 7, 1963 , with 17 charter inductees.

A 39 member committee largely made up of sportswriters selects enshrinees. The selection committee meets the day before each Super Bowl game to elect anew class. Induction takes place during Hall of Fame weekend, in late July or early August, which includes an NFL exhibition at Canton 's Fawcett Field. To be elected, a nominee must receive at least 80 percent support votes. Nominated players must be retired five years, coaches must be retired, and contributors can still be active. The Hall of Fame library in Canton contains many original documents, press clippings, books and magazines. Also the Hall of Fame includes, an area tracing the history of pro football, an art gallery, a room devoted to enshrinees and their teams, and many special exhibits. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton , Ohio for three primary reasons; First the American Professional Football Association, later renamed the National Football League, was founded in Canton on September 17, 1920 . Secondly, the canton bulldogs were an early-day pro football power, even before the days of the NFL. There were also the first two time champions of the NFL in 1923 and 1923. The great Jim Thorpe, the first big-name athlete to play pro football, played his first Pro Football with the Bulldogs, starting in 1915. Thirdly, Canton citizens early in the 1960's launched a determined and well organized campaign to earn the site designation for their city. Through 2005, all but one inductee played some part of their pro career in the NFL. The lone exception is Buffalo Bills guard Billy Shaw, who played his entire career in the American Football League. Some of the Hall of Fame inductees are; Steve Young, who in 2005 joined the elite of the elite with his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Game. He is the game's top rated passer of all time. He is known for his unique ability to run the ball with pinpoint accuracy. Other r famous Hall of fames includes; Jim Brown who was a superb craftsman whose primary job was to run with the football for the Cleveland Browns. John Elway quarterback from Denver Broncos, Joe Montana quarterback from San Francisco 49ers, Earl L. Lambeau, founder, Head Coach, Vice President Green Bay Packers [1919-49], class of 1963 Robert Hubbard, Lance Alworth Flanker[6-0 ,184] class of 1978 etc.
